Sheffield United manager Wilder briefly overtook the former Sunderland boss as front runner for Chris Coleman’s old job.

Mick McCarthy is now odds-on to become Sunderland’s next manager, leapfrogging Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder in the Sky Bet market.
Wilder emerged as surprise second favourite to succeed Chris Coleman after the Welshman’s sacking on Monday, and briefly led the betting.

But it is McCarthy (1/3) who is again on pole, coinciding with Twitter reports suggesting that the former Sunderland manager was back in the North East on Monday.
The 59-year-old left his previous role as Ipswich Town boss earlier this month and previously admitted that he would consider a return to the Stadium of Light.

Now 7/2, Wilder – who warned this weekend that he could quit Sheffield United amid ongoing boardroom disharmony at Bramall Lane – is a former manager of Oxford United, the club supported, and previously invested in, by prospective Sunderland buyer Stewart Donald.
Sheffield United narrowly missed out on top six Championship finish this season, but will begin the 2018/19 campaign a league higher than Sunderland – who were two divisions better off last term.
Leicester City coach Michael Appleton (6/1) is next in the betting, ahead of Jaap Stam (14/1).
