After being on the bench for the early part of the season, Ciaran Clark is now enjoying some regular game time for Newcastle United.

Mick McCarthy has hinted that Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark could return to the Republic of Ireland squad later on this month.

The ROI boss stated that Clark, who has not played for his country since last October, hasn’t done his chances any harm as McCarthy is set to finalise his squad on Thursday.

Towards the back end of last season, Clark’s game time at St James’ Park reduced, and upon Steve Bruce’s arrival, that continued until recent weeks.

Ahead of ROI’s friendly against New Zealand and crucial Euro 2020 qualifier against Denmark, McCarthy hinted that Clark could be in line for a return.

“Ciaran Clark did his chances no harm as well on Saturday,” McCarthy told ROI’s official website.

“His goal was one of the highlights for Newcastle but he played well throughout the game and looked settled in their defence.”

Over the weekend, Clark found the back of the net as Newcastle put three past West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Clark is enjoying his role in a back three for Newcastle, as the system change by Bruce has resulted in the Magpies picking up some positive results.

But the Toon Army faithful will now be looking for some consistency as they take on Eddie Howe’s in-form Bournemouth at the weekend.
