Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford is wanted by an international manager.

Mick McCarthy has revealed to Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday program that he wants Leeds United hitman Patrick Bamford to declare for the Republic of Ireland.

The Leeds striker, who scored the winner in last weekend’s 1-0 win at Bolton, was born in England but is eligible to represent the Irish at international level.

Bamford cost the Whites some £7 million last summer, underlining his talent as a goalscorer.

This is McCarthy’s first job in football management since leaving Ipswich Town in May after a six-year stint, and the former Ireland international confirmed that he wants the 25-year-old – who scored five goals in four games versus his Tractor Boys – to represent the Boys in Green.

“I have asked about him, I’ve asked about lots of players like I normally do,” he told Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday program.

“My intention is to speak to Patrick. He does qualify. He’s a terrific goalscorer. He’s played against my teams. He just puts the ball in the net and you can’t have enough of those.”

Irish fans – especially the many who support Leeds – would love to see Bamford signed up.

It seems very unlikely that the former Middlesbrough and Chelsea marksman will ever win a senior cap for the Three Lions, after making a couple of appearances for the Under-21s.

And if McCarthy and Ireland are offering an invite, why not take it?
