Tottenham Hotspur attacker Troy Parrott impressed this weekend.
Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has told the Irish Sun that he won’t be calling up Tottenham Hotspur striker Troy Parrott for the senior side.
Ireland drew 1-1 with Switzerland on Thursday night, and will now play a friendly with Bulgaria on Tuesday night.
McCarthy will be looking for his side to put a few goals past Bulgaria, just as England did on Saturday, but he’s lost two of his main attackers.
Sheffield United duo Callum Robinson and David McGoldrick have both pulled out of the squad, meaning McCarthy now has only one striker at his disposal – Stoke City’s Scott Hogan.
Some had wondered whether McCarthy would hand a call-up to Troy Parrott, after the Tottenham attacker scored for the Ireland Under-21’s against Armenia on Friday.
That was his Under-21 debut, but the 17-year-old has once again showed that he’s a huge talent for the future, with Spurs and Ireland fans both hugely excited.
Mauricio Pochettino is keeping Parrott around his first team setup this season, but McCarthy isn’t about give him an unexpected senior cap.
McCarthy has suggested that Parrott will stay and play in an Under-21 game against Sweden on Tuesday, as playing in that competitive fixture will do more for him than playing in a friendly, with McCarthy seemingly feeling there’s little to gain from throwing him in now – but the teenager is clearly pushing.
“No, he’s got a competitive game,” said McCarthy. “And Troy, if he plays for them in a competitive game, what more is he going to tell me against Bulgaria, a friendly?” he added.
