Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has told The Daily Mail that Aston Villa ace John Terry is a “bloody good defender”.
Aston Villa pulled off quite a coup by signing the Chelsea legend – who has five Premier League titles and a Champions League under his belt – on a 12-month contract this summer.
The 36-year-old has proven himself a superb centre-back against the Premier League’s finest marksmen for the past 15 years but McCarthy believes that Championship strikers are different.
Nevertheless, the Tractor Boys manager claims that Terry’s experience must stand him in good stead in England’s second tier – and believes he’ll be “relishing the challenge” of mixing it with teams in a lower division.
“The Premier League is supposed to be the blue riband event but some of it is as bland and beige as anything, teams sitting back and waiting to counter-attack,” he told The Mail.
“In the Championship, pretty much every team has a go at it, so the games can be more entertaining.
“But John has to be a right shrewdie at football with all he’s done. He is probably relishing the challenge and if he’s physically right, he’ll be hard to beat because he’s a bloody good defender.”
Terry could make his competitive debut for Aston Villa on Saturday when Steve Bruce’s side host Hull City at VIlla Park.
