Patrick Bamford is completely focused on Leeds United’s promotion push it seems.
Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has admitted that he’s ‘disappointed’ with Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford over refusing an international call-up this month, but he understands the decision.
McCarthy has been chasing the England-born Leeds hitman for much of the year in an effort to tie him down to representing the Boys in Green.
The 25-year-old was a notable omission when McCarthy named his first Ireland squad since returning to the job, ahead of Euro 2020 qualifiers this month.
The former Middlesbrough marksman, a £7 million summer signing by United [Daily Mail], has endured an injury-hit first season in West Yorkshire.
And the ex-Ipswich Town boss intimates that Bamford has elected to focus on helping Premier League-chasing Leeds win promotion back into the top tier.
“I won’t be meeting up with him, not yet, maybe in the summer,” McCarthy told The Daily Mail. “I am disappointed because I think he is a really good striker and he will score goals for us.
“But I do understand it, he has been out for a long time and they [Leeds] look like they are going to get promoted and he doesn’t want anything else going on in his head.”
Fans of the Elland Road side will love Bamford’s commitment. And Marcelo Bielsa certainly needs him more than McCarthy right now.
With Kemar Roofe out injured, Leeds’ promotion fate sort of hinges on Bamford and the fact that he’s 100% committed to aiding the top-flight push is brilliant from their perspective.
