Newcastle United were linked with a move for Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi in the summer, so perhaps they should make another move in January.
Back in the summer, the Daily Mail reported that Newcastle were keen on Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi but were relying on the Blues signing cover up front and then covering some of the Belgian’s wages.
Of course, a move did not happen, and Magpies supporters may have felt that the chance to sign the £33 million forward (via Guardian) may have gone. But perhaps recent news coming out of both clubs just hints that the idea of Newcastle making a fresh bid in January may not be out of the question.
The Telegraph recently reported that after Chelsea’s defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend, Antonio Conte has drawn up a list of potential striker targets for January with Batshuayi struggling to make an impact, and that may enable the 24-year-old to leave Stamford Bridge temporarily.
Meanwhile, Newcastle fans were predominantly rejoicing earlier this week with the news that Mike Ashley has put the club up for sale.
BBC Sport reports that Ashley wants to get the deal done by Christmas, which would mean – if all goes to plan – that the new owners will be in place at St James’ Park by the time the January window comes about.
It remains to be seen who will come in and succeed Ashley, but if they have the funds that Newcastle arguably need to take that next step in the Premier League, then perhaps a fresh move for Batshuayi – even if that is just a loan deal – should be on their radar.
The forward has a fairly impressive strike-rate throughout his career, and would arguably move to the top of the pecking order if he was to join the Magpies.
And if Chelsea land one of their potential striker targets on a permanent basis, then perhaps there may be scope for Newcastle to pursue a permanent deal further down the line if he manages to shine at St James’.
