Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Michail Antonio has been waxing-lyrical about Joe Gomez after his imperious performance against Manchester City.
The England centre-back was on top form against City, winning Man of the Match for his showing against the reigning Premier League champions.
Gomez did everything right against City. He looked sharper than ever and he made the right decision every single time the ball came into a dangerous area.
Erling Haaland was firmly in Gomez’s pocket, and Antonio was very impressed by what he saw, describing his performance as ‘a joke’.

Antonio lauds Gomez
The striker had nothing but good things to say about Gomez’s showing.
“Joe Gomez was unbelievable. He was a joke. You can’t just put it out there and say ‘van Dijk’, you have to give Gomez a shout as well,” Antonio said.
“They had him. There were so many times where balls were put in the box, but they were just there constantly with him.
“There was a couple of times you thought he was going to get a tap in, but they were just there constantly. Those two played so well. They shut him out.”
Won’t want a repeat
The last thing Michail Antonio wants right now is for Joe Gomez to be at his best.
Indeed, Antonio’s West Ham face Liverpool on Wednesday evening, and if Gomez is at his best, the Hammers won’t stand much chance of finding the back of the net.
With all due respect to Antonio, if the Reds could deal with Erling Haaland at the weekend, they may not find it too hard to deal with the Jamaican striker.
However, if they’re not at their best, Antonio may be able to wreak havoc at Anfield. After all, he is one of the most unique and destructive forces in the Premier League right now.
