Sheffield Wednesday failed to return to winning ways in the Championship on Saturday afternoon. Wednesday went down 1-0 to Leeds United away from home at Elland Road.

New Zealand international striker Chris Wood’s goal in the 24th minute proved to be the difference between the two sides in the Yorkshire derby.

The defeat leaves Wednesday sixth in the Championship table with 58 points from 34 matches. Carlos Carvalhal’s side are five points above seventh-placed Fulham, who have a game in hand, and are in danger of dropping out of the playoff spots.

Meanwhile, Leeds find themselves fourth in the standings with 61 points from 34 matches and are genuine contenders for the playoffs.

Former England international cricketer Michael Vaughan, who is a well-known Wednesday fan, has reacted quite amusingly on social networking site Twitter to the defeat for the Owls.

Vaughan has suggested that Wednesday are trying to finish sixth so that they can defeat Leeds in the playoff final at the Wembley Stadium in London.

Leeds fans have responded to the 42-year-old’s comment on Twitter:
