Speaking on Stick to Cricket, Michael Vaughan said the England squad has become too comfortable, arguing that several players have kept their places despite poor performances.
Vaughan compared England’s situation with Australia’s, highlighting how their selectors reward form and discipline.
“I think this England team, there hasn’t been any consequence for failure. I think a lot of these players need to be thrown back into our game. If they do great for the counties, then they come back into the England side.”
“You look at the start of the Aussie summer, when Marnus Labuschagne had to go back and play state cricket. He got a few hundreds, and he got back in the side.
“Jake Weatherald was the best opener that they felt scored runs; he got into the Aussie team. I think English cricket needs a moment like that.”
He urged the England hierarchy to use domestic cricket as a proving ground, not just a feeder system. “Send the players back in. Go and dominate,” Vaughan said. “If you can’t dominate county cricket, don’t think you’re going to dominate under this pressure here.”
