The Celtic man, according to Scottish fans, had a shocker on Thursday but Michael Stewart saw it differently.
Michael Stewart has said on BBC Sport that he was “very surprised” to see Scotland winger James Forrest get subbed off on Thursday.
Gordon Strachan’s side took a big step toward a playoff spot in World Cup qualifying by beating Slovakia 1-0, thanks to a Martin Skrtel own goal on 89 minutes.
Celtic had four representatives on the pitch but one of them – Forrest – seemed to struggle big time and Scotland fans ripped into him on Twitter afterwards.
The Hoops winger did not look anywhere near as threatening as he does for Celtic and as a result Strachan replaced him with Chris Martin – who played an integral role in the winning goal – just after the hour mark.
It remains to be seen whether Forrest retains his first XI spot in Sunday’s visit to Slovenia, but former Hearts and Hibernian ace Stewart suggests the Celtic man was one of his country’s better players on Thursday night.
He told BBC Sport: “The Celtic winger had the better of Tomas Hubocan for most of the game. Very surprised to see him subbed. He was the main outlet, picking the ball up and driving forward.”
Forrest has five goals in eight starts for the Bhoys so far this season.
