Michael Stewart thinks Rangers should be pushing for Louis Moult.

Pundit Michael Stewart has told BT Sport that he thinks Rangers should be rivalling Aberdeen for the signature of Preston North End striker Louis Moult.

Moult, 25, was a goalscoring sensation with Motherwell following a 2015 move from non-league side Wrexham, scoring 50 goals in just 98 games during his time at Fir Park.

The Englishman attracted major interest off the back of his goalscoring feats with Motherwell, and he moved on in January, signing for Championship club Preston North End.

Moult has got off to a slow start at Deepdale, scoring just twice in 11 outings to end last season, though only four of those appearances came as a starter.

With Sean Maguire the undoubted first choice striker under Alex Neil – and Preston still in the market for another centre forward – Moult looks set to be second or even third choice with the Lilywhites this term.

Over the weekend, The Scottish Sun reported that Aberdeen are looking to bring Moult back to Scotland, as they want him snapped up as a replacement for Salford City-bound Adam Rooney.

Now, pundit Michael Stewart has told BT Sport that he thinks Rangers should swoop in and hijack their rivals by making their own bid for Moult, suggesting that he would be a major improvement on Steven Gerrard’s current options.

Gerrard only has Alfredo Morelos and unproven new signing Umar Sadiq as his recognised centre forwards, with Stewart urging Rangers to move for Moult to beef up Gerrard’s strikeforce with his proven record in Scotland.

“For Rangers to look to improve and get further up the table then they need other options up there,” said Stewart. “At the moment, they look a little bit threadbare at the top end of the park.”

“There has been a lot of talk about Aberdeen and potentially Louis Moult. When you are looking at that level of investment then he’s definitely going to be an improvement to the squad at Rangers,” he added.
