Celtic were in fine form against Romanian champions Cluj tonight at Celtic Park.

Pundit Michael Stewart thinks Celtic can progress deeper into the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League and have ‘a real go’ at the competition, speaking to BBC Scotland (03/10 live match page, 21:00).

The Hoops’ comfortable 2-0 win over old foes Cluj tonight has left them top of Group E with four games remaining.

They have progression in their own hands.

However, it must be remembered that a double header against Lazio is to follow. The famous Italian side managed to win 2-1 tonight against Rennes.

Nothing will come easy for Neil Lennon’s men despite an excellent display this evening.

Stewart though was left impressed with the performance of the Hoops, remarking that their attacking ability makes them a threat heading deeper into the competition.

As quoted by BBC Scotland (03/10 live match page, 21:00), he said: “There’s a real good continuity and balance to Celtic and they have a real attacking threat.

“They have a great chance to get out of this group and have a real go at the Europa League.”

He would go on to state at full-time: “The standout thing I take from this win for Celtic was that their energy levels were through the roof. Such a dominant performance and they convincingly put Cluj to the sword.

“Seeing that you wonder how they lost to them the last time and it shows the improvement since August.”

How far can Celtic realistically go?

The Hoops are showing great progress as the season develops. Don’t forget that tonight’s opponents managed to beat them at the same venue in August.

Lennon’s signings are becoming an ever more important part of the way Celtic play. Tonight it was Mohamed Elyounoussi who provided the second goal of the night to put the result beyond doubt.

With others such as Odsonne Edouard, James Forrest and Ryan Christie all at peak form, there aren’t many teams around Europe who would relish a trip to a fiery, sold out Celtic Park.

Stewart is right to suggest they are heading for the knockout stages. Once there, it’ll be a combination of quality and luck that will ensure further progression.

However, if the draw is right and the performances are at the level Celtic can produce, they could make it into the last 16 at least for the first time in many years.
