Rangers could offload a number of players next month.
Michael Stewart has told BBC Sportsound that he would offload five Rangers players in the January transfer window, in the form of Graham Dorrans, Wes Foderingham, Lee Wallace, Jordan Rossiter and Umar Sadiq.
Since Rangers gained promotion back to the top flight under Mark Warburton, the Gers have brought in an enormous amount of players over the last three seasons.
Just this summer, Steven Gerrard brought in 15 new players as he looks to push the Gers closer to Old Firm rivals Celtic. Now only two points behind the Hoops and in the Europa League group stages, they have certainly done that.
But that turnover of players has left the Gers squad hugely bloated, with many frozen out or on loan. Former Hibernian and Hearts midfielder Stewart suggested five players Rangers should axe to cut the wage bill and the size of the squad.
“Lets just play silly fantasy football,” Stewart said, when asked who he would get rid of at Ibrox. “Graham Dorrans, Lee Wallace at left-back, Umar Sadiq – no chance. Jordan Rossiter. [Wes] Foderingham.”
Sadiq is only on loan at Rangers, and he is likely to return to AS Roma in January. Foderingham remains back-up to Allan McGregor, while Rossiter started against Dundee on Sunday. Wallace and Dorrans remain on the sidelines injured.
Rangers currently have 15 players out on loan, including Carlos Pena who is expected to return to the club in the January window from Mexican side Necaxa. The likes of Eduardo Herrera, Jason Holt, Joe Dodoo and Greg Docherty are on loan.
The Gers are set to receive a windfall of money for their participation in the Europa League group stages which will help, but if the club are to continue building and bringing good players to Ibrox – they must offload a few.
They are next in action on Thursday night, as they travel to Austria to face Rapid Vienna. A win would see the Gers qualify for the last 32 of the competition.
