Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers spent big on Ryan Kent yesterday.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Michael Stewart has questioned how Rangers can afford Ryan Kent.

The 22-year-old signed for the Gers in a £7 million deal on deadline day, after impressing at Ibrox on loan from Liverpool last term.

In doing so, Rangers made Kent their second-most expensive signing of all time.

Overall, light Blues boss Steven Gerrard spent the guts of £12 million on players during the summer, and Stewart has asked where the money is coming from for the Scots.

He told BBC Sportsound: “The biggest surprise is this is after qualifying for the Europa League and still the message coming out was that this was going to be a deal that wasn’t going to be able to get done because £7m is a big fee for Rangers and I think, like most people, it’s a wonder of where’s the funds coming from for that?

“£3.5m for Helander, £700k Edmundson, £300k Aribo and then £7m for Kent. You are taking about £12m in transfer fees.

“Rangers lost £15m in their last accounts in November so £7m is a big chunk of money and it’s a case of where is that money coming from?”

Rangers’ director of football Mark Allen said earlier on Tuesday that a ‘sensible’ deal was worked out, with the Scots reportedly paying the Reds £7 million in installments.

The bottom line is that the Gers wouldn’t have signed Kent if it was unsustainable in terms of finances.

With the club’s history of financial issues, it seems very unlikely that a permanent deal for the English winger would have been sanctioned if there was even a remote chance that it could have dire repercussions down the line.
