The Celtic star has six goals in eight Premiership games from midfield this season.

Ryan Christie of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the Betfred League Cup match between Celtic and Dunfermline Athletic at Celtic Park on August 17, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Michael Stewart has claimed that Celtic’s Ryan Christie could and should be used as a striker for Scotland.

Christie is one of the Hoops’ best players since returning from his loan at Aberdeen in the summer of 2018.

As a result of his brilliant Celtic form, the 24-year-old has crowbarred his way into the international scene on a regular basis and started the 6-0 demolition of San Marino last weekend.

The Bhoys’ attacker isn’t a striker but, with Scotland boss Steve Clarke boasting a number of unflattering options going forward, Stewart believes that Christie is a genuine option to spearhead an attack.

He told BBC Sportsound [14/10/2019]: “I think he’s capable of playing as a number nine, but not an out-and-out number nine.

“We’ve got a problem position in the striker, and I think Ryan Christie could do a job up there.”

This could even apply to Celtic who, apart from Odsonne Edouard, don’t have a wealth of striking options.

Leigh Griffiths hasn’t kicked a ball since August due to injury, with Mikey Johnston also sidelined, while Vakoun Issouf Bayo is far from a proven quantity in Scottish football just yet.

If something happens to Edouard, Celtic, who are two points behind Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, have a massive problem and it would be interesting to see if Stewart is right about Christie being equipped to lead the line.
