Rangers drew 3-3 with Motherwell on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership.
Michael Stewart has told Sunday evening’s BBC Sportscene that James Tavernier’s defending for Rangers was “horrendous” against Motherwell, as the Gers drew 3-3 with Stephen Robinson’s side at Fir Park.
Rangers conceded a 94th-minute equaliser to The Well, with captain Peter Hartley bundling the ball home from a corner, ironically after his comments about former Gers defender Fabio Cardoso prior to the match.
Tavernier was at fault for Hartley’s goal, losing the defender from a corner, and doing the same in the first half when Carl McHugh scored to put Motherwell 2-1 up. A brace from Kyle Lafferty and an Ovie Ejaria striker saw Rangers score three.
Analysing Motherwell’s goals, Stewart blasted Tavernier for his lack of concentration from set-pieces as Motherwell took the lead twice before earning a late draw against the Scottish giants.
“This is just horrendous defending from Tavernier, and the players aren’t happy about it,” Stewart said. “It is a lack of concentration from Tavernier from two set-plays that has altered the perception of that result.
Tavernier, 27, was given the captain’s armband by Steven Gerrard at the start of the season, and has seriously impressed going forward with three goals and six assists in all of Gerrard’s 11 games in charge.
However, the defensive side of his game remains questionable, and the two mistakes at Fir Park certainly prove that. Despite his errors, he is expected to start on Thursday against FC Ufa in Russia.
