Celtic won their Europa League first leg against AIK.

Craig Gordon of Celtic looks on during the UEFA Champions League Qualifier between Celtic and AEK Athens at Celtic Park Stadium on August 8, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Celtic’s Europa League campaign is off to a good start after they beat AIK at home in the first leg.

James Forrest and Odsonne Edouard scored the goals, with Celtic keeping a crucially important clean sheet.

Pundit Michael Stewart praised Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon for his role in doing so.

Gordon, in for the injured Scott Bain, was seen at times to be playing slowly, to wind down the clock.

Stewart said there was no reason for fans to be frustrated with him for doing so.

He told BBC Sport: “You hear the Celtic crowd getting annoyed at Craig Gordon not playing the ball quickly, but he’s absolutely right.

“He needs to just take a bit of heat out of the game. Celtic would prefer the game to be more open but they are on the back foot at the moment.”

This was a case where Gordon’s experience kicked in.

He has seen it all in Europe with Celtic, playing against the likes of Barcelona, PSG and Inter Milan.

Celtic needed every edge they could get, and while the scoreline does not guarantee getting through to the group stages, it is a step in the right direction.

Craig Gordon of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.
