Michael Stewart claims that it’s ‘bizarre’ that Glen Kamara only scored his first career goal during Rangers’ win against Dundee

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers thumped Dundee in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night.

BBC Sport pundit Michael Stewart has admitted that it’s ‘bizarre’ how Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara only scored his first career goal during his side’s 4-0 win over Dundee on Wednesday night at Ibrox.

The 23-year-old opened the scoring for Steven Gerrard’s men against his former club, with James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos and James Defoe also getting on the scoresheet.

Kamara moved to the Glasgow club from Dundee during the January transfer window and he has had a positive impact since his arrival.

Speaking to BBC Scotland’s Sportscene programme (28/02/2019 at 12:45 am), former Premiership player Stewart was baffled by the stat that Kamara has never scored a senior goal before Wednesday night’s fixture.

“First every goal [for Kamara], it’s bizarre to think that could be the case,” Stewart told Sportscene. “It was a really good finish, to guide that in from the free-kick into the bottom corner, it was a really nice finish from Kamara.

“He is somebody that has really hit the ground running at Ibrox. I think it was Steven Gerrard talking about how he knits the game really well, picks the ball up from the backline and you see him driving forward, linking it up with the forward play.

“He played that deep line midfielder role for Dundee and he played it very well. Since he has gone to Ibrox, he is not just sitting in there and picking up the ball. He’s been driving forward.”

During his career, Kamara has played for the likes of Arsenal, Colchester and Southend, but it is in Scotland where he has had his success.

The defensive-minded midfielder, who likes to drive from deep inside his own half, will be hoping to reach the highest heights at his new club.

At this moment in time, Gerrard’s side are eight points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table, but catching them in these final few months of the season is unlikely.

But, they can potentially win the Scottish Cup as they will take on bitter rivals Aberdeen at the weekend, who they beat 4-2 at Pittodrie last time out.
