BBC Sport pundit Michael Stewart has claimed that Rangers duo Alfredo Morelos and Conor Goldson were ‘fortunate’ not to receive further punishment during their side’s 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock on Saturday.

At half-time, opposition player, Kirk Broadfoot purposely stepped on Morelos’ heel as he was walking towards the tunnel, with the striker reacting by pushing the Kilmarnock man.

In the game itself, defender Goldson received a yellow card for hacking down Liam Millar as he was trying to run in on goal from the left-hand side. Referee Greg Aitken brandished a yellow card to the player.

Speaking to Sportscene on BBC Sport Scotland (17/03/2019 at 11:55 am), Stewart claims Morelos was ‘fortunate’ not to receive a yellow card for his push, while his teammate should not have been on the field altogether.

“Broadfoot was trying to be cute and trying to antagonise him by standing on Morelos’ heel deliberately,” Stewart told Sportscene.‘He’s fortunate that officials don’t see that, but Morelos can’t react like that. He is fortunate the referee didn’t see that [his push]. It would have been a booking, no more.

On Goldson’s tackle: ‘Conor Goldson has no intention of going for the ball. But there is no question there, he has wiped him out. It’s a professional foul. He’s the last man and he’s fortunate to have got away with that with just a yellow card there.”

The game itself was littered with fouls and controversial talking points from both sides, with the referee coming under huge scrutiny for his decision-making on the day.

Midway through the first-half, Conor McAleny put Steve Clarke’s men ahead after pouncing on a long ball before Morelos turned his marker inside out and lashed in an equaliser after the hour mark.

The Gers pushed for a winner, but they were unable to find one as they had to settle for a point and more dropped points in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Leaders Celtic are now 10 points clear at the top of the table. Many would feel that the title race is now over with the duo set to lock horns after the international break.
