Steven Gerrard has come in for criticism after his post-match comments following Rangers’ win over St. Johnstone.
Michael Stewart has slammed Steven Gerrard on Twitter for his comments after Rangers earned a late win in Perth to beat St. Johnstone by two goals to one – but Celtic icon Chris Sutton has defended him.
Rangers earned a late win against Tommy Wright’s side thanks to a brace from Alfredo Morelos, after the impressive Matty Kennedy had given the Saints the lead in the first half. Morelos turned the game on its head in the 88th minute.
Gerrard told BT Sport after the match: “We were awful, I wasn’t happy for 45 minutes. We shouldn’t have to work that hard to win at places like this, with all due respect. It couldn’t have been any worse.”
BBC Sportscene pundit Stewart blasted Gerrard for his comments, stating there was “no need” for his comments. However, Sutton reacted to Stewart’s Tweet, defending Gerrard for his honesty.
The win saw Colombia international take his goal tally to an excellent 19 in all competitions for the season so far. The former HJK Helsinki striker is the clear leader for the Scottish Premiership’s golden boot, sitting in first with 11.
Celtic earned a comfortable 3-0 win over Dundee on Saturday at Parkhead, but face a tougher test on Wednesday night as they travel to Pittodrie. Rangers play host to Hibernian.
