Michael Owen has shared his thoughts on Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones after Jurgen Klopp’s side kept their Champions League hopes alive by beating Leicester City 3-0 at the King Power Stadium on Monday night.

Before April, Curtis Jones was struggling for game time and to even start for a Liverpool side that was looking like the shadow of the team from years gone by – there were calls for the Englishman to be sold.

But, he has now started the last nine games, which has transformed his form, including a brace against Leicester, with his opening goal described as an ‘absolute beauty’ by Michael Owen, as he told Premier League Productions (15/05/23 at 8:55 pm).

One of Liverpool’s biggest issues this season has been their away form and their midfield.

It could have been easy for fans to make the suggestion that Jones should head for the exit door in the summer.

But the £15k-a-week star (Spotrac) is now starting to cook at the right time, with Owen singing the 22-year-old’s praises.

“It was an absolute beauty,” said Owen. “He makes it look easy. This is a very difficult technique (for Jones’ first goal). The ball is bouncing in front of him.

“Castagne actually played everybody onside. But that is a brilliant finish. Mo Salah, normally when you cross the ball you put it into areas, but I think he genuinely picked Curtis Jones out there. He saw him at the back post. Loads of space.

“When the ball bounces like that, lots of people go with the wrong technique. They try to hit it too hard or they try to strike it with the laces. You have to keep it down in that situation. He almost studs it into the far corner. Really difficult and he made it look really easy.”

CAN LIVERPOOL PIP NEWCASTLE OR MANCHESTER UNITED TO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLACE?

The fact that Liverpool are still in the Champions League race, given how their season has gone, is pretty remarkable.

But all they can do is win their matches and their hopes of securing Champions League football can only remain intact.

Yes, they will need help from others, but it’s Aston Villa up next, win that, then there is every chance they can take it to the final day of the season, and then, anything can happen.
