Michael Owen has praised Rangers and Celtic for their stadiums, Ibrox and Celtic Park respectively, on BT Sport 1 (12:38pm, December 13, 2021).
Ibrox Stadium of Rangers and Celtic Park of Celtic are a “fortress”, according to Owen.
The former Liverpool striker made the comments following the Europa League draw on Monday.
Rangers, now managed by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, will take on Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League knockout round play-off.
Meanwhile, Celtic will face Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt in the Conference League knockout round play-off.
Owen said on on BT Sport 1 (12:38pm, December 13, 2021), as transcribed by The Scottish Sun: “A small chance. They have a chance but have to play on the fact that Ibrox is a fortress.
“There isn’t many grounds, even in the Premier League, like Celtic or Rangers and that is a fortress.
“So they have to stick in the tie and get something in Germany and then pull off the miracle at Ibrox.”
Praise for Rangers and Celtic
In our opinion, Owen’s comments on Rangers and Celtic show how highly the two Scottish Premiership giants are rated.
Yes, the Scottish Premiership is not an ‘elite’ domestic league, but no one can doubt the size of Rangers and Celtic.
Absolutely No one.
In our view, if the Gers and the Bhoys were in the Premier League for a few years, then they would be challenging for the title.
Rangers and Celtic have a huge fanbase, and, as Owen suggests, Ibrox and Celtic Park are very intimidating for opposition players.
We find it really refreshing to see a Premier League pundit give the Gers and the Hoops their due credit.
