Michael Owen slammed Trent Alexander-Arnold as ‘silly’ for his push and possible penalty against Ryan Sessegnon during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Spurs felt they should have had a spot-kick in the first half when there was a shove from the Liverpool right-back on the Spurs defender, as the ball was rolling out of play.

In the end, nothing was given, with Owen stating that if a penalty had been awarded, then he wouldn’t have complained, as he told Premier League Productions (06/11/22 at 5:25 pm).

Even though Jurgen Klopp’s side secured all three points, it was an up-and-down afternoon for Alexander-Arnold.

The home team were trying to be aggressive towards his end of the pitch, and ironically enough, he was punished for a foul on that side for pushing Sessegnon as he tried to dance past him with the ball.

Nonetheless, this is what Owen made of Tottenham’s penalty shout today, as they fell to another home defeat in the Premier League.

“He gives the ball away in the first instance, doesn’t he Trent,” said Owen. “There is no question there is a little shove. Whether it’s enough to give a penalty. You are right on the threshold.

“It’s sort of a 50-50 and I think Liverpool got away with it. And we saw a similar one yesterday (Cancelo red against Fulham).

“There is more force (from Cancelo). I think that’s more of a penalty than the Trent one. If they give a penalty against Alexander-Arnold, I wouldn’t be complaining.

“It’s silly as well. Where is he going? At least with Cancelo, he’s running and he’s about the shoot. It’s an opportunity. But that’s just rolling out for a goal kick, it doesn’t matter, so to almost risk giving a penalty away is a strange one.”

CHANGE OF MOOD BEFORE THE WORLD CUP?

Well, those are a big three points for Jurgen Klopp and his players because they are now seven points behind fourth-placed Spurs with a game in hand.

Those problems the Reds have suffered, are still there, even if they win their final game before players jet-off to the Middle East.

But it’s some form of comfort for their fans that they are still sitting on the outside knowing that they are capable of going on a crazy run, during the second half of the season, in order to climb towards the top again.
