Unfortunate for him, but given Liverpool’s success, fans could forgive him making a bad choice.
The mistake fans will never get over is his decision to join Manchester United.
Owen joined the Red Devils in 2009 after his Newcastle contract expired, seeing the move as his best option to gatecrash England’s 2010 World Cup squad.
Eight years on and Owen’s image is irreparably damaged with Liverpool fans, although he attempted once again to try and explain his decision making process.
After getting frustrated at still receiving abuse he described as ‘hateful’ over his United spell, Owen last night hit out.
Owen is Liverpool’s international ambassador, and upset Reds fans by explaining how his move to United came about due to the Manchester club’s failure to sign Karim Benzema – and Owen admitted urging the Frenchman to play for Real instead, The Mail reported.
There are even online petitions among Liverpool fans to get Owen removed as club ambassador, as it is an issue supporters feel strongly over.
Owen isn’t giving up trying to explain himself, but if his message has not been listened to over the past eight years, he is probably fighting a lost cause.
