Michael Owen stated that Liverpool duo Darwin Nunez and Andy Robertson were urging their teammates to ‘give the ball to Cody Gakpo’ during their 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United on Sunday.

The former England striker says that moment happened just before Gakpo opened the scoring in what was a quite crazy afternoon on Merseyside.

Liverpool’s January signing netted a brace and opened the scoring during an afternoon of football that will live long in the memory of every single Reds fan.

There were some who even felt that, given the form Erik ten Hag’s men were in, this was Manchester United’s best chance to win at Anfield in many years.

Well, the 2023 League Cup winners returned to Manchester having suffered perhaps the most humiliating defeat and performance in the club’s history.

Nonetheless, just before Andy Robertson and Cody Gakpo could work their magic for the opening goal in the first half, Owen shared what he noticed, as he told Premier League Productions (05/03/23 at 5:25 pm).

“You can see, players from Liverpool, Nunez and Robertson,” said Owen. “Both of them are pointing and saying ‘give the ball to Gakpo, he’s on his own’.

“Eventually, it doesn’t go to Gakpo. It goes to Robertson. But two of them are free because Dalot isn’t marking any of them.”

GAKPO STARTING TO COOK

Was it ever in doubt? Near-on every Liverpool forward under Jurgen Klopp has cooked.

From the record-breaking Mo Salah to Diogo Jota, who netted 15 Premier League goals last season. All of them play their part.

Darwin Nunez has proved that since his summer move. He just needs that fine-tuning and composure to his final third play, which is now starting to show.

But with Roberto Firmino set to leave Liverpool in the summer, they have a player in Gakpo that can step up to the mark next season and that £35 million fee (Guardian) might prove to be another bargain.
