Michael Owen has told BT Sport that Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is a “different player” when Jordan Henderson starts – as the duo starred for Jurgen Klopp’s side on Tuesday night in a 2-0 win over Scottish side Rangers.
There has been plenty of criticism in the media over the last few days for Alexander-Arnold. His omission from England’s side by Gareth Southgate has been analysed, while many have blamed him for Brighton’s three goals.
But he was given another start on Tuesday night. While pundits continue to focus on his weaknesses, Alexander-Arnold reminded everyone what his strengths are. On seven minutes, he curled a gorgeous free-kick past Allan McGregor.
The England international was in superb form. A sublime range of passing throughout, and probably should have notched a couple of assists – had his teammates scored. Owen thinks Alexander-Arnold shines, when Henderson plays.

“Jordan Henderson was absolutely sensational. Alexander-Arnold would have been buzzing to see Henderson on the team sheet. Alexander-Arnold does not worry when Henderson plays, it gives him insurance. He is a different player.”
Owen: Alexander-Arnold a ‘different player’ when Henderson starts
The trust between the two England players is boundless. When Alexander-Arnold goes forward, he knows Henderson can cover him on the right. It is something he cannot expect from Fabinho, James Milner, Harvey Elliott or Thiago.
Henderson himself has struggled for regular game time this season. Taken off on 70 minutes during the 2-0 win, he even showed some signs of frustration. A hamstring recently saw him miss games against Napoli, Ajax and Everton.
But if Liverpool are to get the best out of Alexander-Arnold, and that is buy letting him focus on his attacking attributes, then Henderson has to start – as Alexander-Arnold’s anchor. £20m Henderson was superb against Rangers.
