The 17-year-old became Liverpool’s youngest ever goal-scorer in midweek.
Quoted by the club’s official website, Michael Owen has described Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as the perfect manager for Ben Woodburn to develop under.
Woodburn hit the headlines this week as he became the club’s youngest ever goal-scorer when he struck in the 2-0 win over Leeds United in the EFL Cup.
His goal saw him break a 19-year-old record previously held by former striker Owen.
The strike sparked wild celebrations on and off the pitch, with the Anfield faithful dreaming that the midfielder could be their next Steven Gerrard.
He has some way to go to reach that level of course, but Owen believes he is working with the perfect manager to do so.
“He’s with the perfect manager in Jürgen Klopp. As soon as he [Klopp] came in, he showed his interest in the youth set-up,” the club’s official website quotes him saying.
“Ben’s obviously still very young, so it’s a long game for him. He’s got to be managed throughout his career, not just for the here and now.”
All eyes will now be on Woodburn to closely monitor his development over the coming months and years.
At just 17 he has a long way to go until he is ready to be competing for a regular first-team spot at Anfield.
However, Klopp has shown throughout his short reign already that he has no problem with handing youth a chance and it would not be surprising to see Woodburn featuring more often in the coming months.
