Michael Owen says he finds it ‘quite staggering’ that Divock Origi hasn’t lost his sharpness or fitness at Liverpool, as he told Premier League Productions (24/04/22 at 6:45 pm).
For the umpteenth time, Origi came off the substitutes bench to score yet another important goal in Liverpool colours.
Whilst this wasn’t a last-minute winner against Everton, it was still another headed Merseyside derby goal for the 27-year-old at Anfield.
There aren’t many players that have legendary status despite largely being substitutes, but Origi falls into that category.
Former Liverpool striker Owen praised the player for always being at the top of his game, despite not being a regular starter under Jurgen Klopp.
“If you are in a rhythm, the easy bit is coming on and making an impact as a sub,” said Owen. “Everyone is tiring and it’s a free punch.
“The hard bit is the never playing bit. You get out of rhythm. Your mindset is not playing. You go to bed on a Friday and you don’t expect to play.
“If you keep doing the right things, keep eating the right food, go to bed at the right time, training perfectly and you keep getting disappointed every weekend. Then something switches off, at some point.
“For him to stay at that level and that sharpness. And every single time he is called upon, he comes on and makes a difference is quite staggering. He doesn’t lose his fitness, his sharpness, he doesn’t lose anything, appetite or attitude.”

With this being Origi’s final season on Merseyside, a statue of the player is probably being carved up right now.
The back-up striker has every right to put his name up with some of the best the club has seen.
Origi may not have the quality of a Mo Salah or Steven Gerrard, but one thing is for sure, the number of important goals he has scored for the club is quite incredible.
And with the Reds chasing all four trophies heading into May, then he might have a few more magical moments up his sleeve yet.
