Darwin Nunez is going through a lean patch and he is coming under fire once again for Liverpool.
The Liverpool forward wasn’t helped by the fact that his side recorded a goalless draw at home to Manchester United on Sunday, in what was a pretty poor showing in front of goal.
Michael Owen expressed how he is still ‘really surprised’ by how raw Darwin Nunez is and how the lack of basics let him down, as he told Premier League Productions.
But the former England striker admitted that the 24-year-old can also ‘take your breath away’.
That’s why he probably divides opinion because, whilst the player himself doesn’t know what he is going to do half of the time, you would still pay a lot of money to watch him in action.
This is Liverpool’s club-record transfer and his second season in England, but now the fans want to see him take that next step.
But as Jurgen Klopp’s side push for the Premier League title, and lose top spot following the weekend results, Michael Owen shared his thoughts on Darwin Nunez.
Darwin Nunez’s qualities
“That hasn’t changed and that’s him as a player,” said Owen about Nunez’s off-the-cuff style.
“That’s something I have said many a time that I would be very, very nervous saying what you talk about him now because there are a lot of basics in his game that need improving upon. He actually does a lot of the hard things well. Some of the things he does, they take your breath away. You are thinking ‘wow’, if you could just get your basics right.
“I am really surprised at how raw this lad is. A player of his age and to come for that money, all the rest of it, and still be so raw.
“However, he has attributes that he could develop, with good coaching, it could come good for him – he could make you look silly if you pour scorn on his game.”

Liverpool v West Ham United
Nunez started and was subbed on Sunday against Manchester United, but that doesn’t mean he will he won’t start against West Ham United tonight.
It’s League Cup action for the Reds and Klopp usually rotates his players in this competition.
And with Nunez needing some form, it’s probably best he is handed another start because it’s needed for all parties.
Although, if it were up to the club’s legendary figure, Phil Thompson, he would drop Nunez tonight and start Cody Gakpo.
