Newcastle United spent a club-record fee on signing the South American last month.
Michael Owen has admitted to The Daily Star that he looks forward to not seeing himself referenced as Newcastle United’s most expensive player of all time any longer.
Newcastle brought a bit of a saga to an end last week by paying a club-record £20 million [The Sun] to sign Miguel Almiron from MLS Cup winners Atlanta FC.
It had taken the Magpies nearly 14 years to break the record set by Owen when the North-East side spent £16 million on signing him from Real Madrid in 2005.
And the legendary striker admits he’s glad to know that he isn’t the Tyneside club’s most expensive addition any longer.
“I suppose I was, yeah,” he told The Daily Star when asked if he was surprised at how long his record at St James’s Park stood.
“My fee was about £16m – it gets reported as a couple of different figures – but you would have thought even in this day and age moderate players can go for similar figures.
“Every single time I tend to read an article about a Newcastle transfer I’d get a mention in it so hopefully they’ll leave me out now.”
Miguel Almiron only started training with Newcastle today [The Chronicle] after securing a work permit in Paris earlier this week.
