Michael Owen says he has been ‘impressed for some time’ with Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Illan Meslier at Leeds United, as he told Premier League Productions (08/02/23 at 10:20 pm).

The former England hitman praised Leeds United for sticking with the 22-year-old through his difficult times, amid transfer rumours that he could replace Hugo Lloris at Tottenham.

The veteran Spurs shot-stopper is currently facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury during his side’s win over Manchester City, but the 36-year-old knows his days in north London are numbered.

Lloris has made four errors leading to goals this season – the most of any keeper in the Premier League. Added to that, he has less than 18 months left to run on his current contract.

Tottenham are sounding out possible long-term replacements for their long-serving player, with Meslier, a fellow countryman of Lloris’, a possible target.

One thing is for sure, a new goalkeeper will arrive in the summer at Hotspur Way, it’s just a case of who the club will push for, one thing is for sure, Michael Owen is a fan of one of their targets, as he stated after Leeds’ 2-2 draw at Manchester United.

“I have been impressed with him for some time,” said Owen. “Every goalkeeper makes mistakes. He’s a young kid still and he’s made his fair share of mistakes.

“To go through that pain, as a manager and a club, to stick with a youngster, when he was making a lot of mistakes early on. But I think everybody could see the potential in him.

“Leeds are going to reap the rewards of that in years and years to come. The more he matures. Everybody can see the raw ability.”

LLORIS AT HIS FINAL HURDLES

There are suggestions that Lloris could be out for around eight weeks, if that’s the case then he might not be back until April, and with the season ending in May, he’s risking the chance of not playing for the club again.

The reason is, if Lloris doesn’t return to action in time, then he could be replaced in the summer and be out of the door.

Of course, there is every chance that the recently retired France international takes a step back ahead of next season, either way, it won’t go down well with fans if he’s still the club’s number one given his recent error-prone ways.
