Michael Owen has told the Daily Mirror that a new takeover could be a major positive for Newcastle United.

Amanda Staveley is believed to be close to buying Newcastle from Mike Ashley, and there is great excitement about the future at St. James’ Park from supporters of the Magpies.

And Newcastle fans’ optimism is shared by Owen, who feels that if the Magpies new owner has the club’s best interest at heart then Newcastle could benefit.

“Every manager would love money to spend. If it is the right takeover, I’m sure with a new passion and new injection of money and general feel-good factor, it can work,” Owen said.

“Newcastle is a one-club city and when the club is doing well everybody is buzzing and there’s a bounce in their step.

“I think any bit of news like that will improve morale and spirit among the fans, and that is always positive. It just depends on Mike Ashley — if he is willing to sell and if a new person comes in that has the club at heart.”

Ashley has been widely criticised for not backing Newcastle with enough money during his time in charge.
