Michael Owen says Everton will appoint a ‘real hero’ as their next manager after Frank Lampard’s sacking, as he dropped Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson’s names into the hat, as he told The Final Word on Premier League Productions (23/01/23 at 10:35 pm).

Everton sacked Lampard as manager on Monday following their 2-0 defeat to fellow strugglers West Ham United on Saturday, with the Englishman leaving the team in the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Whilst there has been discontent, unhappiness and anger from supporters this season, Lampard didn’t bear much of that brunt, instead, it was mainly aimed at owner Farhad Moshiri and the club’s under-fire board.

Everton fans want those sitting in the boardroom booted out, so the club can pick themselves again and avoid suffering relegation to England’s second-tier for the first time in over half a century.

Whilst Lampard’s 15% win percentage this season was deserving of him getting booted out, which was touched upon by Jamie Carragher, at the end of the day, there are still far bigger problems than the now-departed Chelsea legend.

Therefore, whoever does come in, better have balls of steel, as the legendary duo Wayne Rooney and Ducan Ferguson certainly have the character to deal with the fire raging inside Goodison, which was touched upon by Michael Owen.

“I think the next appointment now is certainly going to be one that is going to appease the fans, it will be their main priority,” said Owen.

“Okay, they want to survive and they want somebody who is going to give them the best chance of doing that, but they can’t get somebody that fans aren’t going to get behind and support. I think it’s going to be a real hero let’s say, maybe even a past player from Everton.

“Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson, it will have to be a name like that, wouldn’t it?!”

MAKE OR BREAK FOR THE TOFFEES

This appointment will determine whether Everton spend the next few years struggling in the Championship, or pushing out of their current mess.

It wasn’t so long ago that Rafa Benitez was appointed, bringing in someone like that would pretty much send Everton down straightaway.

But if they bring in that experienced head, like a Sean Dyche, then it will have a different meaning to proceedings and the mood around the place will be lifted.
