Michael Owen has told Optus Sports how Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was shown no respect by Raheem Sterling late on yesterday.
Sterling caused Liverpool’s defence a whole host of problems yesterday, as the Reds picked up a comfortable 4-1 victory.
The England international winger won City a penalty in the first-half, which they missed, and was a constant menace thanks to his dribbling ability.
Alexander-Arnold clearly struggled when asked to defend against Sterling.
And by the end of the match Owen noticed the City wide-man was finding the game far too easy, as he was just breezing past the Liverpool full-back.
He said: “It was almost a sad indictment of how Raheem Sterling was feeling towards Trent Alexander-Arnold when later on in the game, the way he ran at him he was like wow, you thought you were going to get past me just by kicking the ball [ahead of him]. It was like ‘I’ve got you on toast here, it’s easy’.”
Alexander-Arnold’s display for Liverpool once again highlighted his flaws.
The 22-year-old is unquestionably a world-class talent going forward, but there are some concerns growing about his defensive ability.
Alexander-Arnold has been forced to play on the back foot more often this term, with Liverpool not establishing such dominance in their games, and he has often been found wanting.
Liverpool’s defeat to City means that they now sit 10 points behind City, and their title hopes are surely over.
