Ibrox side Rangers have signed a cracking player in Joey Barton, says Michael Mols.
Speaking to the Glasgow Evening Times, Rangers legend Michael Mols revealed that he has been impressed by the Gers’ recruitment of Joey Barton.
The 33-year-old signed a two-year deal with Rangers last month after leaving Burnley on a Bosman, despite helping the Clarets to Premier League promotion.
He is in the twilight of his playing career but, given his profile, Barton’s arrival created a huge buzz on the blue half of Glasgow.
The tough-tackling midfielder has earned a reputation as something of a no-nonsense player, and Mols, who spent five years at Ibrox, is certain that the ex-Newcastle United and Manchester City man will prove a hit in Glasgow.
“I think Joey Barton is a good signing because it puts somebody in midfield with strength. Sometimes Rangers have lacked that kind of player,” he told the GET.
“He has done well in England and will be a real quality player for Rangers next season. There’s no doubt about that.
“Barton has great movement, but you need physicality in midfield too. That’s important too. The club have done really well to bring a player like him up to Scotland.”
Barton is the fourth player that will arrive at Rangers this summer, with manager Mark Warburton already bringing Jordan Rossiter to the club from Liverpool, while Matt Crooks and Josh Windass signed pre-contract agreements earlier in the year.
Indeed, Rangers, who will compete in the Scottish Premiership next season for the first time in four years, are certainly not resting on their laurels as a return to the big time looms – and supporters will expect plenty more signings, too.
