Michael McGovern backs Jimmy Nicholl for Rangers success

Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers will reportedly appoint Jimmy Nicholl as Gers manager Graeme Murty’s assistant, and Norwich City goalkeeper Michael McGovern speaks highly of him.

Rangers look set to appoint former Gers defender Jimmy Nicholl as manager Graeme Murty’s assistant.

The 61-year-old, who had two separate spells at Ibrox in the 1980s, is currently working as a number two at Scottish Championship club Falkirk and will leave after after Tuesday’s game against Dunfermline Athletic, according to BBC Sport.

Falkirk manager Paul Hartley was quoted as saying by BBC Sport last week that Rangers have been given permission to speak to Nicholl.

It seems that it is only a matter of time before Nicholl becomes part of the Rangers backroom team, and Norwich City and Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Michael McGovern has backed him to be a success at Ibrox.

McGovern has worked with Nicholl in the latter’s capacity as the Northern Ireland assistant manager, and he has spoken highly of him.

Interestingly, the 33-year-old himself was once linked with a move to Scottish giants Rangers.

Back in June 2016, The Sunday Post reported that Rangers were interested in signing McGovern following his departure from Hamilton Academical at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

McGovern eventually join Norwich in the Championship in England in July 2016 on a free transfer.

“It’s a clever move from Rangers because you’ve got Graeme Murty who is a young coach and Jimmy could complement him with his wealth of experience,” McGovern told The Daily Record.

“He has obviously been at Rangers as a player during a fantastic career that also saw him play for Manchester United and at the World Cup with Northern Ireland.

“His CV means he will command instant respect from all the players in the dressing room and he’s a really positive influence about the place.”

“I can understand that some people might think he’s old school but I can tell you he is anything but old school,” added McGovern.

“You find some people who have been in the game for so long that they become a bit bitter but Jimmy couldn’t be anything further from that. He is such a radiator and he’s always bubbly and great to have around the place.”
