The former Swansea City duo are exactly what Rangers need.
The fact that Chico Flores is perhaps best remembered in Britain for being cackled at by an irate Sam Allardyce and getting into a rather heated training ground row with then team-mate Garry Monk, as alleged by the Daily Mail, does the defender a disservice.
After all, his all-action displays did help Swansea City lift the first major trophy in their history, the 2013 League Cup.
However, as he’s currently hoovering up the riyals in Qatar with Lekhwiya, it seems the chances of him returning to Britain with cash-strapped Rangers appear rather fanciful. Unless, of course, the Ibrox giants turn to former Swans boss Michael Laudrup to fill their managerial void.
The former Danish legend, brother of former Rangers favourite Brian, could be exactly the kind of candidate the club are on the lookout for.
“We need someone who is a winner and someone who gets what this is all about and what Rangers is all about, which is winning,” managing director Stuart Robertson told the Belfast Telegraph recently.
“We are looking for the highest calibre possible, a club of this standing deserves the highest quality of manager.”
And they don’t come much more high profile than Laudrup, a title winner with Ajax, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Yet, his managerial record hasn’t quite hit the same heights but, if he is to establish himself once again in the coaching world, leaving Al Rayyan and taking on the Rangers challenge wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
And history suggests that, where Laudrup goes, Chico Flores follows. Signed by Laudrup at Real Mallorca, Swansea and Lekhwiya, the 29-year-old would certainly represent an upgrade on Rob Kiernan or the ageing Clint Hill at Ibrox.
The fact he’s out of contract at the end of the season helps too.
