Jackson Koivun has been dubbed golf’s next big thing.

The 21-year-old has dominated the amateur ranks this season as the highest ranked amateur in the world, and he made a highly-anticipated US Open appearance at Shinnecock Hills. He didn’t disappoint.

Koivun, who many expect to be golf’s next big star, was the low amateur alongside Ryder Cowan, finishing five over par and in T23. It was a composed display from Koivun, who showed experience beyond his years.

He recently announced his intention to turn professional, making this his last event as an amateur. Koivun will make his PGA Tour debut at the John Deere Classic after earning membership via PGA Tour University system.

But is he ready to take the next step? Michael Kim gave his honest verdict after playing with him at Shinnecock.

Michael Kim’s verdict on Jackson Koivun

Kim played alongside Koivun during his first two rounds at the US Open, and he was impressed with how the young star played. But he also mentioned some of the holes in his game that he must patch up to compete at this level.

He took to X to share his honest thoughts on Koivun: “A lot of questions about what I thought of Jackson Koivun’s game.

“He’s a tour level player right now. He’s known to be a great putter I think but he has good overall game too. Lots of confidence.

Who are you most disappointed in?

“He also made some mistakes that many younger pros make. Just way too aggressive on certain approach shots and missing it in places where you’re throwing away shots. Stuff I did as well when I played my first US Open. I think regular tour courses he will do very well at.

“He is a good putter but I don’t think these were the greens to showcase that. He’s super aggressive on short putts. No scar tissue yet haha. Look forward to competing with him for a long time.”

Michael Kim praises Sahith Theegala after US Open

Kim also played alongside Sahith Theegala at the US Open, and he also took some time to praise him for his game around Shinnecock.

Theegala put his name in the mix going into Sunday, but wasn’t able to make a late charge.

Despite that, Kim said he was fun to watch: “Side note: watching Sahith play is really fun especially on courses like Shinnecock where imagination can be fully brought out. Great short game, and not afraid to work the ball. Always fun playing with him.”

Theegala has an entertaining game, and seems like a great guy. It would be fun to see him in the mix at a major championship in the future.
