The Burnley player looks set for a move to Everton despite previously being linked with a return to Manchester United.

According to a recent report in the Daily Mail, Everton are closing in on the signing of Burnley defender Michael Keane, and the 24-year-old can achieve everything he wants to at Goodison Park if a deal does ultimately go through.

That comes after earlier suggestions that he was on his way to Manchester United, before Jose Mourinho opted to bring Victor Lindelof to Old Trafford.

As reported by the Sun earlier this summer, United were gearing up to bring Keane back to United. But as is the way with United’s transfer policy under the Portuguese, they prioritise players in key positions despite bidding for multiple targets and the Burnley man was clearly behind Lindelof on the club’s wish list.

That does not mean Keane should become despondent at failing to return to United two years after his cut-price and ill-conceived departure.

Such is Everton’s progress under manager Ronald Koeman, with a number of exciting new faces already in place or expected to arrive in due course, that Keane can fulfil his footballing ambitions on Merseyside and make United regret their decision all the more in the process.

Everton have already wrapped up deals for Davy Klaassen and Jordan Pickford while the Mirror claims Henry Onyekuru will be announced shortly and the same publication suggests a deal for Sandro Ramirez will be completed after Spain’s U21 European Championship campaign.

With those signings, alongside Keane, Everton will be viable candidates to finish in the top four next season and Champions League football will open up a whole host of possibilities for Koeman and his players moving forward.

Keane’s dream return to United may not have come to fruition, but he can make new dreams at Everton; the club making the transfer window look easy and who could be dark horses for silverware in 2018.
