Everton defender Michael Keane formed a great partnership with Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma at Goodison Park last season.

Michael Keane comes out for the warm up before the Premier League match between Everton and Leicester City at Goodison Park on January 31, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

Michael Keane has admitted to the Liverpool Echo that he tried to get Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma to sign for Everton in the summer.

Keane and Zouma formed a great partnership at Everton last term, with Chelsea loaning the Frenchman out to Marco Silva’s side.

BBC Sport claimed that Everton were keen to sign Zouma from Chelsea for £30 million, but the two sides could not agree a move.

And Keane admits that he did ask Zouma whether he would be moving to Everton over the summer months.

“Yeah! I did [ask him about the potential move] a good few times!” Keane said.

“Unfortunately it didn’t look like it was going to happen at any point really. I said ‘when are you coming?’

“To be fair, he loved his time here and he’s gone back to Chelsea and it’s a chance for him to impress and the manager wanted to keep him so he didn’t really have a say.”

Zouma has played fairly frequently for Chelsea this term, although he has not fully convinced back at Stamford Bridge.

Everton have certainly missed Zouma’s presence in their defence though.

The Toffees have been in woeful form so far this season, and currently sit in 18th place in the Premier League table.

Keane has been partnered by Yerry Mina in central defence, but they have not looked anywhere near as solid as when Zouma was in the Toffees’ team.
