Michael Gray has claimed on Twitter that he would love to see Garry Monk appointed Sunderland manager.
The 38-year-old is out of work at the moment following his shock decision to quit Leeds United last week.
New Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani later claimed on Twitter that Monk was offered a three-year deal – a departure which might suggest that the young coach already has another job lined up.
In terms of betting, the ex-Swansea City manager is in contention for managerial roles at Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough.
But Gray, who spent 12 days at Sunderland as a player, said on Twitter that he would be his number one pick to succeed David Moyes in the North East.
Despite leaving Leeds on a bum note, Monk, whose side finished seventh and five points adrift of the playoff places last season, enjoyed a very encouraging first season with the Whites.
He certainly enhanced his credentials as one of the best young managers in the English game, and Sunderland would be lucky to have a coach of his talent.
According to Oddschecker, Monk is around 20/1 to get the job at The Stadium of Light.
