Sunderland fan and former Mackems player Michael Gray has been raving about Newcastle United.

Speaking to Talksport on Tuesday, Gray expressed his belief that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has built a title-winning side at St. James’ Park – and he expects them to break the 100-point mark for the second time in as many seasons at Championship level.

Newcastle switch focus to the EFL Cup on Tuesday, when a near full house is expected despite their guests being divisional rivals Preston North End.

And, through almost gritted teeth, Gray praised the Magpies fans for their unwavering support.

“Obviously, I’ve got my allegiances with Sunderland,” the 42-year-old said. “But when I’ve been to St. James’ Park over the last two or three seasons I’ve seen exactly the same thing when I go: full to the rafters, supporting a side through thick and thin.

“Rafa’s there now they’re all behind him, they’re playing some wonderful football. They’re gonna get over 100 points this season – I think they’re already four points better off than they were when Chris Hughton got them up last time.

“I can’t see anybody stopping them, they’re all playing for second place in the Championship.”

Newcastle began the campaign with shock back-to-back defeats, but have gathered momentum since then and went top of the league for the first time a week ago.

Another win on Saturday, however, combined with Norwich’s defeat against Preston, means Benitez’s men now hold a three-point advantage over the chasing pack.

Hughton’s team accumulated 102 points during the 2009-10 season, but Newcastle would need another five points to break the all-time record, set by Reading in 2005-06.

Gray was part of a Sunderland side which held the previous record of 105 points, set during the 1998-99 campaign.
