For the longest time, Michael Edwards has been the king of transfers at Liverpool.

The man has masterminded some of the greatest signings in Anfield history. He brought in the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Alisson and helped build the squad that has brought Liverpool so much success in recent years.

He’s also been fantastic when it comes to shifting the Reds’ deadwood. He received eight-figure fees for the likes of Jordon Ibe, Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster, earning the Reds a hefty windfall for three players who have since proven not to be up to scratch.

However, Edwards doesn’t get it right every time.

Indeed, there is one instance of Liverpool selling a player for a lot less than he was worth, and if any transfer deal is going to give Edwards sleepless nights, it’s this one.

Of course, we’re talking about the deal to take Ryan Kent to Rangers for just £7m.

The winger has been a revelation since moving to Scotland, he’s scored 26 goals in three seasons, and he’s shone in the Europa League.

The fact that Steven Gerrard has previously described Kent as a ‘game changer’ tells you all you need to know about how good he has been.

Understandably, his performances north of the border have seen him linked with a move back to England, with Leeds United reportedly very interested in signing the star.

Leeds would have to pay a hefty fee to sign Kent as well, Alex Rae has claimed that the Ibrox star is worth at least £25m, while the Gers already rejected an eight-figure offer from Leeds last summer.

Now, we’re not going to say that Kent could have challenged Sadio Mane for a place in Liverpool’s first team, because, let’s be honest, very few players in world football could.

However, it has to be said, Kent is now undoubtedly worth more than Liverpool sold him for, and with Edwards being the expert of getting the most out of his player sales, he made a real mistake here.

Perhaps if Steven Gerrard one day becomes the manager of Liverpool, he’ll look to bring Kent back into the fold at Anfield.
