The end of the transfer window is almost upon us, and despite rumour after rumour, Michael Edwards still hasn’t signed a centre-back for Liverpool.
Sven Botman, Sokratis, Ben White and Ozan Kabak have all been linked, but it seems as though nothing is going to come to fruition, with Jurgen Klopp saying that it’s not going to happen, despite the fact he says it would be nice if Liverpool did get a new defender.
Of course, the man who makes the decisions on transfers is Michael Edwards, and if he doesn’t sign a centre-half in the coming days he will have done something he’s never done before at Liverpool – let Jurgen Klopp down.
Edwards and Klopp have been something of a transfer dream team ever since the Sporting Director arrived at the club in November 2016.
Every single window under Edwards’ tenure has been brilliant, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a single Liverpool fan who disagrees with that view.
Edwards has had window after window of brilliance, Mo Salah signed in his first summer window, then his first January signing at the club was Virgil van Dijk.

The arrival of van Dijk was followed up by the summer signings of Alisson, Fabinho and Naby Keita, and from that point onwards Liverpool didn’t really need strengthening as they powered through the season losing only one league game and becoming European champions.
The summer of 2019 saw very little movement, as Liverpool were confident that they had the squad to achieve their goals, and they were right, they dominated the field in the Premier League.
Thiago and Diogo Jota further strengthened the title-winning side, but an unheralded spate of injuries at the back has left Liverpool lacking.
Alarm bells should have been ringing when Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, two midfielders, were forced to play together at the back, but despite this, Edwards still hasn’t signed a centre-back despite Klopp saying that they probably need one.
Yes, money is tight during these times, but even a short-term deal for a free agent could massively help them, someone like Sokratis, who Liverpool were offered the chance to sign, could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
For the first time since his arrival, Edwards is in danger of letting Klopp down in the transfer market, but with just over a week to go in January, he has the chance to put things right.
