Alderweireld’s future at Spurs is in doubt with only a year left on his contract.

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Michael Dawson has told TalkSPORT that chairman Daniel Levy should give into Toby Alderweireld’s demands rather than risk losing him this summer.

The 29-year-old’s game time has been marginalised by Mauricio Pochettino this season with the Belgian yet to sign a new deal, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the 2018-19 season.

The Daily Mail claim Alderweireld wants a huge £200,000 a week, with Paris Saint-Germain set to offer the former Atletico Madrid and Southampton defender a contract in that region according to the report.

Toby Alderweireld of Spura arrives prior to The Emirates FA Cup Quarter Final match between Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur at Liberty Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Swansea, Wales.

But Dawson has urged Spurs to rip up the current wage structure in north London, and instead open up the chequebook to finally secure Alderweireld’s future.

“There’s talk about Toby Alderweireld [leaving], who I think is a top, top player… give him his wages. Give him what he’s worth,” Dawson said.

“Otherwise if one goes it’s a roll on effect where they all think ‘well, he’s gone and he’s gone’. The better players will maybe then be looking [to leave].”

The Belgium international has only featured 21 times in all competitions this season, though a hamstring injury against Real Madrid did reduce his game time.

With Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen forming an excellent partnership at the back this season, it remains to be seen whether Spurs will offer Alderweireld a new deal to keep him in north London.
