Michael Dawson admits that he is stunned after Tottenham Hotspur beat Dortmund in the Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur produced a brilliant display to beat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Michael Dawson has admitted that he would have ‘laughed at you’ if you told him before the game and at half-time that Tottenham were going to beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The former Spurs defender pointed towards the absence of attacking duo, Harry Kane and Dele Alli as one of the reasons why he didn’t expect Mauricio Pochettino’s side to win so convincingly, including their first-half performance.

Both teams went into the half-time break goalless, but the home team produced a masterclass in the second-half by scoring three goals and gaining a big advantage going into the second leg in Germany.

Nonetheless, Dawson singled out goalscorer Jan Vertonghen as one of the star players and he admitted that he couldn’t believe what he was seeing on the night.

“Alli not playing, Harry not playing and watching it [Spurs’ performance] in the first half and if you said it would have been 3-0. I would have laughed at you,” Dawson told Sky Sports News on 13/02/2019 at 9:50 pm.

“They did everything [in the second half]. Jan Vertonghen was ‘super Jan Vertonghen’. He was incredible, with the goal, assist, he was up and down and kept Sancho quiet.”

Heung-min Son opened the scoring two minutes into the second half before Vertonghen, who was the provider for the first goal, doubled his side’s lead seven minutes before time.

Pochettino then introduced striker Fernando Llorente into the fold from the bench and he stuck within minutes of being on the field as Dortmund were stunned as to what they were seeing.

There is no doubt that this result will further boost Tottenham’s morale because they are flying high in the Premier League and they needed that extra confidence after being knocked out of the Carabao & FA Cup last month.

Nonetheless, over the course of the season, Vertonghen has played 20 games in all competitions for his side, according to transfermarkt. He has mainly played at centre-back either in a flat back four or with three at the heart of the club’s defence.
