Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily Podcast, Michael Dawson has spoken about Gareth Bale on a personal level, claiming that everyone’s perception of him is wrong and that he’s really quiet.
Bale has been blasted in the media a number of times, and perhaps that comes with the territory of being on a reported wage of £650,000 a week, but Dawson believes that people have got him wrong.
Of course, the centre-back knows him well having been his teammate at Tottenham for years, and he claims that the idea of him not caring and being a sulker is wrong.
“He’s that kind of character isn’t he JJ? People say ‘oh he’s not playing, he’s sulking’. But he’s not like that Gaz, he’s a leader on the pitch, but off it. I played golf with him all the time, he’d play his golf and then he’d go home,” Dawson said.
“When he wasn’t playing early on at Spurs coming back here, everyone was saying ‘look at his body language, does he care?’. Of course he cares, Gaz a few years ago was in the top five players in the world, 13 trophies he won at Madrid, the overhead kick he scored, those kind of things are just sensational.
“As a human being you are what you are, you get lively ones, ones who doesn’t shut up, ones who get everyone together back in the day when we’re going for a beer, but Gaz wasn’t that, he was really quiet, but you are what you are and you’re never going to change that.”

It seems as though the idea of Bale kicking up a fuss is wide of the mark.
The Welsh winger hasn’t been afraid to be a bit outlandish in the past, who could forget his famous ‘Wales, Golf, Madrid,’ banner? But it seems as though it’s all in good jest and he’s not actually one to cause any problems.
Spurs seem to be getting the best out of him at the moment, but Dawson refuses to believe that the player was the one causing problems earlier this season.
