Michael Carrick hasn’t ruled out the chance that Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw could be back in action for Manchester United against Newcastle.

Shaw started Sunday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace but was forced off in the first half, replaced by Noussair Mazraoui after just 24 minutes.

Maguire also left the pitch early, though his exit came much later, with Jonny Evans coming on in the final minutes of normal time.

After Manchester United’s Premier League win over Crystal Palace, Michael Carrick was asked about the availability of both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.

And at that time, the 44-year-old Manchester United icon confirmed both Maguire and Shaw were simply unwell, rather than nursing any new injuries.

Carrick provided further updates during his pre-match press conference at Carrington ahead of the midweek fixture against Newcastle.

“We are hoping so, we are working towards it,” he said when asked about their chances of being fit to face Newcastle.

He added: “They weren’t feeling well. We will give them every chance. It wasn’t [an] injury, both weren’t feeling too good.”

No major updates from Michael Carrick on Mason Mount or Matthijs de Ligt ahead of Man Utd’s clash with Newcastle

There have been no recent updates on Mason Mount, who has now missed Manchester United’s last five Premier League games after picking up a knock in late January.

The 27-year-old midfielder last featured during Michael Carrick’s first game as interim manager, a home fixture against Manchester City.

Mount, who wears the No 7 shirt, has made 19 appearances across all competitions this season despite ongoing fitness issues, scoring three goals and providing one assist so far.

Matthijs de Ligt hasn’t played since before Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim on a short-term basis. The Dutch defender has missed United’s past 16 matches in all competitions.

De Ligt hasn’t featured for his side since last November due to a lower back issue. His most recent appearance came in the club’s away win over Crystal Palace earlier this year.
