Michael Brown lauded Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden as a ‘wonderful’ talent on BBC Radio 5 Live (28/9, 21:34) after impressing in defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG dented the Citizens’ Champions League group stage bid on Tuesday night with a 2-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s side. Goals from Idrissa Gana Gueye and Lionel Messi in either half dealt the damage to the Citizens. Who fall to third in Group A, behind Club Brugge.

Manchester City had produced the better performance before Messi waltzed his way onto the scoresheet. But the woodwork proved the bane of the Premier League title-holders, with Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva striking the goalframe.

Foden impresses Brown despite Manchester City loss

Guardiola introduced Foden as a second-half substitute at the Parc des Princes for Jack Grealish. He could not inspire a turnaround to the result, yet the 21-year-old left a big impression on Brown.

Foden pleased Brown with how the Manchester City product went about his game and can offer Guardiola a versatile option. He featured on the left against PSG, but has also played in deep and attacking central midfield roles this season.

“Phil Foden is only going to get better,” Brown said. “He glides through the games, he’s a wonderful talent. Whether he’s asked to play as a nine and goes to press or asked to play wide on the left-hand side, he just gets on and plays.”

Stockport-born Foden even featured as a false-nine as Manchester City beat Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday. The Stamford Bridge affair marked his first start of the Premier League term and second of the season across all competitions.

He had missed the start of the campaign due to a foot injury sustained during Euro 2020 with England. Foden has also only scored and assisted in the Carabao Cup, with one strike and two created against Wycombe Wanderers.
